NextDecade and Project Canary Launch GHG Measurement and Certification Framework

Apr 19, 2021

NextDecade and Project Canary today announced the formation of a joint pilot project for monitoring, reporting, and independent third-party measurement of greenhouse gas intensity of LNG.  The pilot project will monitor LNG sold from NextDecade’s planned Rio Grande LNG export facility. Rio Grande LNG has been permitted for full-scale development of 27 mtpa of LNG (5 trains) at the Port of Brownsville, Texas. Initial FID is currently expected this year on approximately 11 mtpa (2 trains).

Project Canary provides emissions monitoring data and related technologies across the energy value chain. In this pilot Project Canary will use its certification process to confirm each element of the natural gas value chain has achieved low emissions targets for LNG exported from Rio Grande LNG.

“Project Canary’s independent measurement and certification platform will provide transparency and give confidence to our customers who are increasingly focused on securing low greenhouse gas-intensive LNG.” said Matt Schatzman, NextDecade’s Chairman and Chief Executive Officer.

Last week NextDecade and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries America announced an engineering services agreement for carbon capture technology to be used at the Rio Grande LNG project
