BP-operated Greater Tortue Ahmeyim LNG Project Advances as FPSO Vessel Successfully Departs for Final Destination

Jan 23, 2023

On January 20th, 2023, the Greater Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) LNG project took a step forward as the floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) vessel set sail from Qidong, China towards its final destination off the coasts of Mauritania and Senegal. This marks the completion of a three-and-a-half-year construction process, which included successful sea trials according to a statement from BP.

The first phase of the project aims to produce 2.3 million tonnes of LNG per year. The FPSO will process natural gas by removing condensate, water, and other impurities before exporting it via pipeline to the FLNG facilities, located 10km offshore. With eight processing and production modules, the FPSO has the capacity to process around 500 million standard cubic feet of gas per day.

The majority of the gas will be liquefied by the FLNG facilities for export to international markets, while some will be allocated to meet the growing demand in Mauritania and Senegal. The FPSO, which will sit in approximately 120m of water, will have up to 140 people on board during normal operation and serve as the home for the project's production team. The FPSO is made of more than 81,000 tonnes of steel, 37,000m of pipe spools, and 1.52 million meters of cable. It has also undergone over 330,000 inspections to ensure its readiness for the journey ahead.
