U.S. DOE Natural Gas Exports Monthly Report - January 2024

On March 25th, 2024 the U.S. Department of Energy released the U.S. Natural Gas Imports and Exports Monthly which covered

January 2024.  Overview summary from that report is below.

  • Overview: January 2024 U.S. LNG Exports
  • The United States exported 396.2 billion cubic feet (Bcf) of natural gas as liquefied natural gas (LNG), representing 58.8% of total U.S. natural gas exports, to 30 countries.
  • Distribution by region:Europe received 283.7 Bcf (71.6% of U.S. LNG exports).
  • Asia received 76.3 Bcf (19.2%).
  • Latin America/Caribbean received 36.3 Bcf (9.2%).
  • Compared to December 2023, there was a 6.3% decrease in LNG exports.
  • Compared to January 2023, there was a 17.6% increase in LNG exports.
  • A significant 88.6% of total LNG exports went to non-Free Trade Agreement (nFTA) countries, with the remaining 11.4% to Free Trade Agreement (FTA) countries.
  • The top five destination countries for U.S. LNG exports were:
  • United Kingdom (42.9 Bcf, 10.8%)
  • Turkiye (42.7 Bcf, 10.8%)
  • Netherlands (41.9 Bcf, 10.6%)
  • Spain (38.8 Bcf, 9.8%)
  • France (28.0 Bcf, 7.1%)
  • These top five countries accounted for 49.1% of total U.S. LNG exports. This represents a 6.0% increase from December 2023 and an 11.5% increase from January 2023.
  • U.S. Imports and Exports by Pipeline and Truck with Mexico
  • The United States exported 185.1 Bcf of natural gas to Mexico and imported less than 0.1 Bcf from Mexico, resulting in 185.1 Bcf of net exports.
  • U.S. Imports and Exports by Pipeline and Truck with Canada
  • The United States exported 92.5 Bcf of natural gas to Canada and imported 327.0 Bcf, leading to 234.5 Bcf of net imports.
  • There was a 36.7% increase in net imports from December 2023 and a 33.4% increase from January 2023.
